Wash orange. Firmly push cloves into rind.
Place orange, apple cider or juice, and cinnamon sticks in a 6-quart pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer covered for 1 hour. Remove the orange if cooking longer to avoid any bitterness.
