Spring heralds new beginnings and this year we are all hopeful that life is back to it where it was before the pandemic. We are reinvigorated and looking forward to the coming seasonal festivities. One of the first holidays we observe is Mother’s Day. Let us celebrate our traditions, our mothers, and spring season with a beautiful brunch.

The history of Mother’s Day has an interesting backstory. It came about through the efforts of a woman named Anna Jarvis when she thought there should be a way to honor the sacrifices that mothers made for their children. She organized an official celebration in Grafton, West Virginia in May of 1908 with the backing of Wanamaker’s Department Store. On that same day at other Wanamaker’s stores in Philadelphia, thousands of people attended Mother’s Day events. In the spirit of celebration, Jarvis sent 500 carnations (dianthus) to participants in Philadelphia. This act that has forever associated the dianthus—translating as “flower of love” or “flower of the gods”—with this annual holiday of love and admiration.
Following the success of these events, Anna Jarvis started campaigning for an official day to honor mothers. By 1912, many states had adopted Mother’s Day as an annual holiday, but it didn’t get recognized by the Federal Government until 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation establishing the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.
For us at Veggie Fest, Mother’s Day is a special holiday that honors our first connection to love in this world. Our mothers took care of us when we were unable to do so. They taught us to talk and walk, to be polite and responsible citizens. They showed us how to hold a spoon and how to tie our shoes. They forgave us a hundred and one little things that probably drove them up a wall. They have loved us unconditionally from the moment they saw us and in doing so, they taught us to love.
How we choose to honor our mothers has a lot to do with our creativity and very little to do with our pocket book. We don’t have to spend a lot of money to make our moms feel special. Consider doing something nice to make her life just a little bit easier. After all, it is the gift of our time that is the most precious. Some of our favorite ideas have to do with food and flowers!

Regardless of how casual or formal you want to go, set a pretty table with her favorite dishes. Think soft colors and flowers (carnations?). Think china and tablecloths. Think baked goods and fresh fruit. Make it festive to honor your mother—and the mom inside us all—on her special day.
