Elderberry Decoction or Tea

These highly medicinal bluish-black berries are antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory. Enjoy a cup of hot elderberry tea at any time of day. With or without honey, it’s relaxing and helps to keep the winter blues away.

Ingredients

 2 tablespoons dried black elderberries (sambucus nigra)
 16 ounces water
 raw honey to taste (optional)
Garnish
 Fresh lemon or lime slices
 Fresh mint leaves
Optional:
 ¼ teaspoon cinnamon powder or 1 cinnamon stick
 ½ teaspoon turmeric powder

Instructions

Combine water and elderberries in a non-reactive saucepan (ceramic, enamel, or stainless steel).

Bring water to boil. Then, reduce heat to simmer. Cover and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove from heat.

Cool, strain, and add raw honey to taste (optional).

Garnish with fresh lemon or lime slices and fresh mint leaves.

Optional ingredients to simmer with elderberries for an added immune boost are ¼ teaspoon cinnamon powder or 1 cinnamon stick or add ½ teaspoon turmeric powder.
